There are few things scarier than hearing the C word from your doctor. Whether it is you or a loved family member, it is terrifying. My personal experience started several years ago when my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer. She recovered from surgery and was doing well until it reared its ugly head again 2 years ago. My wonderful, beautiful mother passed away a year ago this month and I miss her every single day.
I have spent most of my career, 26 years to be exact, working around cancer patients at the Montgomery Cancer Center and now at Central Alabama Radiation Oncology. I have seen the toll – physically, emotionally, and financially – that comes with fighting this awful disease. But I have also seen the incredible strength of patients and family members.
I could not be more honored to be a Woman in Blue this year! The assistance that the Cancer Wellness Foundation provides to patients in need is invaluable! The battle is hard enough without worrying about how to get transportation to and from treatments or whether you can afford your medicine. I am proud to be a part of this fundraiser in honor of my mother and the many people I have been fortunate enough to meet through my work. Thank you to Carol Gunter for thinking of me and thank you to everyone who supports this extraordinary cause!
