Women in Blue | Dawn Railey

In late October 2024 I found out that one of my dearest friends in the world had been diagnosed with colon cancer. Until that moment my life had never really been affected by cancer. A few family members had routine skin cancers removed, and my Mom had a small tumor that required surgery but no radiation or chemotherapy. But certainly not the Big “C” so many have had to face. Until now.
Tammy quickly went from being stage 3 to stage 4 as colon cancer also became liver cancer. Tammy is family to me. She is one of the “ride or die” women in my life. We go back to Troy State University and the Sound of the South where we me and became life-long friends, along with Tammie, Margaret and Abi. The five of us are wildly independent women who share the same heart. A heart that beats with love for and devotion to one another, our families and our Lord.
In November, Carol Gunter reached out to let me know I had been nominated to be one of the “Women In Blue” with the goal to raise awareness and funds for Colon Cancer. My answer was an immediate yes. When God thumps you on the head you need to listen!
Tammy has agreed to let me share her story and journey in hopes someone will benefit from her experience. I am embracing this journey in honor of my friend, Tammy.
